Jones and Malone Named Athletes of the Week

February 17, 2014

Jonathan Jones continued to dominate the field in the shot put on Saturday taking home his third victory of the season at the SPIRE Division I Invite. Jones broke a facility record, a UB school record and a MAC record in the shot put with a distance of 65'5.50 (19.95m), beating the second ranked thrower in the country in the process. He currently leads the MAC in the shot put by over 5' and is ranked #7 overall in the NCAA. Jones has broke the school and MAC records in the shot put twice so far this season.
Freshman forward Alexus Malone had a career day when her team needed it most Saturday afternoon, scoring a career-high 20 points to go with 10 rebounds in a 66-57 comeback win over Northern Illinois. With her scoring aside, her defense was a major factor in helping the Bulls erase a 13-point deficit with 11:44 to play in the game, making four of her career-high six steals in that stretch. She also converted on a pair of three point plays in what would become a 20-1 run that helped push UB ahead. Her free throw shooting helped the team stay ahead after completing the comeback, hitting 5-6 free throws in the final 11 minutes of the game. The first-year starter has upped her game so far in February, averaging 11.5 points over four MAC games.
