BUFFALO, NY - Twenty-four Mid-American Conference (MAC) student-athletes were presented the Medal of Excellence Award Tuesday evening, with UB basketball standouts Will Regan and Kristen Sharkey among them.
The Medal of Excellence is a newly created award which will be presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each of the 12 conference member institutions. To be honored with the award, student-athletes had to participate on the varsity level in a conference-sponsored sport with a minimum 3.50 accumulative grade-point average, exhibited athletics excellence, leadership and service.
"The Medal of Excellence Award is a reinforcement of the core values that we as a conference and each of our member institutions all possess with excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and service," said MAC Commissioner, Jon A. Steinbrecher, in the conference's official release. "We congratulate all of our 24 Medal of Excellence Award winners."
Regan, a two-time Academic All-MAC member, finished this year with a 3.646 GPA as an accounting major. He ended the 2013-14 season third on the team in scoring at 10.6 points per game and he was second on the squad with 5.8 rebounds per contest. Regan finished in double figures in 16 games, including a season-high 25 points in a win over Kent State, where he had his first career double-double.
Sharkey made the All-MAC third
team after a career season on the post. She was the only player to
start every single game, averaging 31.1 minutes per game and set
new career highs in every major statistical category, highlighted
by a five points per game increase in scoring and a 2.6 rebound per
game increase. She led the team in scoring 12 times and led the
team in rebounding 10 times, with 10 double doubles for the season.
Her 430 points are the 14th most in a single season in program
