Watch Awards Show

BUFFALO, NY – Jonathan Jones of the track and field team and Jackie Hall of the women’s soccer team were named the male and female Student Athlete of the Year, respectively, to highlight the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York Blue and White Awards Show held at Alumni Arena on Sunday afternoon.  For the first time in school history, the show aired live on ESPN3.

In May, 2014, Jones earned his second straight All-American honor in the outdoor shot put, and his fourth straight overall, as he came in 11th place in the 24 person field at the NCAA Championships. The Portville, NY native recorded a long throw that traveled 63'02.25" (19.26m). During his record-setting 2014 season, the junior produced not only the school record in the event but also the MAC record with a throw of 66'04.50" (20.22m) at the MAC Championships.

Hall, the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-MAC member, earned third-team All-American accolades, the first in UB women's soccer Division I history, after the most dominant season by a UB defender in history. The Brunswick, OH native led a back line that pitched a program-record 14 shutouts en route to winning the MAC Championship and making its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Hall also won the Clifford C. Furnas Award. Provided through annual interest earnings from the C.C. Furnas Fund in the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc., it recognizes outstanding undergraduate performance in scholarship and athletic prowess. The recipient must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and be committed to graduate study, have strong personal character and outstanding athletic accomplishments. Hall was an Academic All-American as well named to the Academic All-MAC team.

Hall’s women soccer teammate Courtney Mann as well as Will Regan of the men’s basketball team were given the Ideal Bull Distinguished Student-Athlete Leadership Award. The award is given by the Intercollegiate Athletics Board to honor senior athletes who have demonstrated leadership beyond their own teams to the Division and/or the campus, and whose character, actions, excellence and concern for other student-athletes make them strong ambassadors for the Division of Athletics and the University at Buffalo.

Sean Harvey, a thrower on the men’s track and field team earned the Chrisy Dickerson Unsung Hero Award. Selected by SAAC, the award recognizes an individual who makes a significant contribution on the court, field or in the pool and is recognized for his or her dedication, unselfishness and contribution to the team. The award is named in honor of Christine Dickerson, a member of UB’s rowing team who died tragically in a car accident in Ellicottville on December 11, 2002.
