Phil Ryan has been a strength coach at the University at Buffalo since 2013 when then Athletic Director Danny White asked if he would return to work in Sports Performance. Prior to that, Ryan served as the UB Strength Coach for Olympic Sports (1996- 2004) and UB Fitness Director from 1996 to 2013.
Ryan completed an advanced Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from SUNY at Buffalo in 1996. From 1993 to 1995 directed the strength program as a Graduate assistant for the UB football team.
In 1990, completed his BS in Business Management while playing football at Canisius College.
Ryan worked for the Buffalo Bills in Stadium Operations from 1985 to 1991. In 1988, he interned with Rusty Jones, the Buffalo Bills Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. In January 1991 he traveled with the Buffalo Bills to Super Bowl XXV as an administrative assistant to Bill Polian, the General Manager for the Buffalo Bills.
During his time at UB, Phil has been invited to assist with testing at the NHL Combine, United States Figure Skating Association Nationals (USFSA) presented on strength and conditioning topics for USA Swimming, NCAA track and field youth clinic, UBs Perry lecture series. and several local high schools
After college he coached JV Football for his alma mater St. Francis High School, where he coached Notre Dame assistant coach Brian Polian.
Ryan resides in Hamburg with his wife Jacquie and son’s Griffin who attends Clarkson U and, Brendan who is playing lacrosse for Army-West Point.
