BOWLING GREEN, OHIO – The University at Buffalo softball team split its doubleheader at Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls overcame a four-run deficit to come back and win 7-6 in eight innings in game one before falling 4-0 in game two.
The Bulls wasted no time getting on the board in game one as Anna Aguon led off the game with a walk and later stole second before Rachel Steffan blasted a two-run home run to left center field to give UB an early 2-0 lead.
The Falcons answered in the bottom of the inning as they scored three runs on three hits to go up 3-2 and they would add another run on an RBI single to take a 4-2 lead through three innings of play. The hosts continued to pile on the runs in the fourth as they added two more runs on three hits and a UB error to go up 6-2.
Buffalo got the bats going in the top of the sixth as Steffan was hit by a pitch and Alexis Lucyshyn walked before Alexis Matheney singled up the middle to load the bases and Olivia Kincanon capitalized in a big way as she smashed a grand slam to right center field to tie the game at six.
Neither squad scored in the seventh so the teams headed to extra innings where the Bulls pulled ahead as Kincanon walked and then Julia Tarantino helped her cause with an infield single to bring up Ally Sobaszek who singled up the middle to put UB up 7-6 and that would be all the Bulls would need as Tarantino retired the Falcons in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
Bowling Green struck first in game two as they took advantage of a UB throwing error to score a run in the bottom of the first and added another in the third on a wild pitch to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Falcons then added two runs on a pair of hits to go up 4-0 through four innings of play and that would be all they need as Payton Gottshall tossed a no-hitter in a dominant effort in the circle.
Up next, Buffalo returns home to host Miami (OH) in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 15 at 3pm.
