UB Aquatics strives to provide safe, comfortable, and professional aquatic programming for the State University of New York at Buffalo students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members.

Swimming and Water Safety are important skills for the members of the Buffalo community. UB Aquatics is determined to ensure that those who live in and around the Buffalo community have the knowledge and skill to enjoy aquatic environments safely.

It all begins with Learn-to-Swim.

Policies & Procedures

Alumni Arena:

  • General Policies:
    • Alumni Arena Natatorium will open no sooner than 5 minutes prior to Recreation Swim.
    • 1 Lifeguard is required for every 4.25 swimming lanes that are open for swimming.
    • Swimmers must present their Student ID or Recreation Pass prior to swimming.
    • Swimmers must wear a swim cap when hair exceeds the length of 1 inch.
    • Inflatables are absolutely NOT PERMITTED.
    • All floatation devices must be US Coast Guard Approved.
    • Diving is not permitted in depths less than 8 feet (except competitions).
    • Use of starting blocks is reserved for competition only.
    • The pool deck shall not be used as a hallway.
    • Patrons must obey all Lifeguard Directions.
  • Lap Swim Policies:

    • Circle Swimming is required when 3 or more swimmers are present in a lane or when lane is designated Circle Swim Only.
    • Walking is only permitted in the first lane at the far end of the Main Pool.
    • Please swim in lanes with people of similar swimming speeds.
    • Swim Lesson Policies:
      • Swim lesson participants must present their receipt of payment at the beginning of the first class.
      • Swim lessons must have a lifeguard present on the pool deck.  Instructors do not count.
      • Swim lesson participants must swim at their designated swim times.
      • Only 1 make up class should be allowed for private lessons per session.
      • Make up classes for group lessons are NOT PERMITTED.
  • Lifeguard Class Policies:

    • Participants must be present at all classes.
    • Participants must bring their receipt of payment to the first scheduled class.
    • Participants must pass a pre-course swim test.
    • Participants must act professional at all times.
    • The instructor reserves all right to pass or fail a participant as it pertains to the requirements of the American Red Cross.
    • Refunds will not be given to participants that fail the course due to lack of participation, absenteeism, failure to achieve 80% on written tests.
    • Refunds will be given to participants that fail to complete the pre-course swim test.
  • Rental Policies:

    • All rentals must be booked through outside events.
    • All rentals must present proof of insurance.
    • All rentals must have detailed itineraries.
    • Diving Well Policies:
      • All swimmers in the diving well must pass a swim test prior to swimming.
      • Use of springboards are reserved for diving practices and meets.  (Coaches must be present)
      • Use of 7 Meter and 10 Meter platforms are reserved for diving practices and meets.  (Coaches must be present)
      • Divers must wait for the last diver to clear the entry area before jumping.
      • 1 diver on the diving board at a time.
      • No double bouncing.
      • Divers must jump straight off the board or platform
      • The diving well must be observed by at least 1 lifeguard when swimmers are swimming or diving in the diving well.

Clark Hall:

  • General Policies:
    • Minimum of 1 Lifeguard is required for the Clark Hall Pool.
    • Swimmers must present their Student ID or Recreation Pass prior to swimming.
    • Swimmers must wear a swim cap when hair exceeds the length of 1 inch.
    • Inflatables are absolutely NOT PERMITTED.
    • All floatation devices must be US Coast Guard Approved.
    • Diving is not permitted in depths less than 8 feet.
    • The pool deck shall not be used as a hallway.
    • Patrons must obey all Lifeguard Directions.
  • Rentals:

    • All Clark Hall Pool rentals must be booked by the Clark Hall Supervisor.
    • All rentals must present proof of insurance.
    • All rentals must have detailed itineraries.

For your added safety, regular safety drills are conducted during all programming.

Thank you for clearing the pool immediately when you hear the air horn. This will allow lifeguards to quickly conduct their rescue so that you may return to your aquatic activity with minimal disruption.
