WESTFIELD, IN – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York baseball team (3-12, 0-2 MAC) dropped both games of their conference opening doubleheader against the Northern Illinois Huskies on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls fell 3-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two. With the losses, the Bulls drop to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in Mid-American Conference action.
Game One – BUFFALO 1, Northern Illinois 3
The Bulls lineup was shut down in the first game of the afternoon by the Huskies pitching staff as Ben Neumann started the game and allowed only one hit to UB through the first seven innings of action. The Huskies staff only allowed two hits to the Bulls while striking out nine.
UB got their lone run of the game in the eighth inning as Charlie Sobieraski ripped a triple down the right field line and then Justin Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to right center field to score Sobieraski. Nick Sinay was the only other Bull to record a hit in the game as he legged out a single to the shortstop in the sixth inning.
Brent Cleland started on the mound for the Bulls, allowing four hits and three runs while whiffing five batters through three innings of action. Sophomore Alec Tuohy replaced Cleland in the fourth inning and pitched brilliantly for the Bulls as he finished off the final six innings of the game without allowing a run. Tuohy struck out four batters while allowing only three hits and one walk in his sixth relief appearance of the season.
Game Two – BUFFALO 2, Northern Illinois 3
In game two, the Bulls were not able to produce runs despite recording six hits. The pitching staff once again was the strongest part of the team as Anthony Magovney pitched six innings while allowing five hits and two runs and striking out four Huskies.
The Huskies got on the board in the first inning against Magovney as they started off the inning with a single and he came around to score on a sacrifice fly three batters later.
UB responded with the tying run in the third inning as leadoff hitter Nick Sinay legged out a bunt single to third base and then stole second base. After Ben Haefner moved Sinay over to third base with a ground out, Bobby Sheppard earned the RBI with a ground ball out to second base.
Northern Illinois grabbed the lead back in the fourth inning but the Bulls responded quickly in the fifth to tie the game at two. Sinay yet again started off the inning with a walk and then stole his second base of the game to get into scoring position for Haefner. Haefner then platted Sinay as he reached first on an error by the first baseman.
After a scoreless sixth inning from Magovney, sophomore Mike Kaelin entered the game and got out of the seventh inning without allowing a run. Unfortunelty for the Bulls, NIU was able to score the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly.
UB will return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 pm as they take on the Northern Illinois Huskies in the final game of a three game set in Westfield, IN.
