BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo senior guard Dontay Caruthers was one of 17 players named to the Academic All-MAC Team, the Mid-American Conference announced on Friday morning. Caruthers is UB's first Academic All-MAC selection since the 2017 season.
The 2019 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Caruthers has a 3.67 GPA as a graduate student in education studies.
Caruthers averaged 8.6 points per game as he played in all 36 games for UB, starting three of those contests. He scored 20 or more points four times during the year, including a career-best 28 points at Bowling Green. Following that performance, Caruthers was named the MAC's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Caruthers was also named the MAC's Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, becoming just the third player in league history to win the award multiple times.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
