BUFFALO, NY – After a historic opening weekend, the University at Buffalo men's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MAC) returns to UB Stadium this weekend for a pair of non-conference matches. The Bulls will host Stony Brook on Friday morning at 10:00 am before playing host to Incarnate Word on Sunday at 11:00 am.
The Bulls opened up their 2016 campaign in blistering fashion as they were able to score a program record nine goals in their 9-0 shutout of Daemen on Friday night at home. The Bulls backed up their nine goal performance with a solid 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Canisius to retain the Big 4 Shield and move to 2-0 on the year. The UB defense was able to secure back-to-back shutouts to open the season for the first time since the 2004 campaign. Buffalo also garnered their highest Great Lakes Region ranking in program history this week, No.5.
The Buffalo offense is being led by senior captain and 2015 MAC Player of the Year Russell Cicerone who currently leads the nation in goals (5) and points (12) to go along with a MAC-best 18 shots. Freshman midfielder Rikard Lindqvist had a great start to his UB career as he netted a goal and four assists for six points through two matches. Lindqvist's four assists leads the NCAA. Senior captain Braden Scales has one goal and one assist while a pair of defenders, Austin Place and David Enstrom, each have a game-winning goal and assist on the year.
The Buffalo defense has been strong through two matches as junior goalkeeper Joseph Kuta has notched two cleansheets while making eight saves on the year. The backline of Fisher, Enstrom, Place and Fox Slotemaker has allowed just 24 shot attempts against without conceding a goal on the year.
Stony Brook enters Friday morning's match with a 1-1-0 overall record as they fell at home to Hofstra 3-1 on Friday before earning a 2-0 win over Seton Hall on the road on Sunday. The Seawolves are led offensively by Thibault Duval who has netted a goal and assist while Tom McMahon owns a 1.50 goals-against average with six saves and a cleansheet on the year between the pipes.
Incarnate Word currently owns a 0-2-0 record on the year and will play at Canisius on Friday night. The Cardinals dropped their season opener to Oral Roberts 2-0 on Friday before falling 3-0 to #12 SMU on Sunday. The Cardinals are led offensively by Robert Pratt who has a team-high six shots while Ben Conway has notched five shots so far this season. Incarnate word has allowed just one goal in the opening half this season but have conceded four in the second 45 minutes of play.
