BUFFALO, NY – Having led the University at Buffalo men's tennis team to their first ever win over Harvard, junior Vilhelm Fridell was named the Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
At No. 1 singles, Fridell won the deciding match in a 4-3 victory at Harvard, who advanced to the Round of 32 at the NCAA Tournament last year. With the match all tied up at 3-3, Fridell overcame a first set defeat by Andy Zhou of Harvard and came back to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6. Fridell was then dominant in the third as he won it 6-2, sending the Bulls to victory in their spring opener.
It was one of two wins on the day for Fridell, who got things started for UB in doubles with partner Simon Wibler as they won 6-4 at first singles, helping Buffalo clinch the doubles point, which turned out to be the deciding factor in the match.
The Bulls will take a week off before opening the home portion of the schedule on Saturday Feb. 2 at 4pm against Temple.
