WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team had a dominating 7-0 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday as the Bulls won all three doubles matches and all six singles contests, including five of those in straight sets. The win improves Buffalo to 3-2 on the year.
The doubles action began at second doubles as junior Hao Sheng Koay and senior Ethan Nittolo swept their opponents, 6-0. Junior Vilhelm Fridell and freshman Simon Wibler then clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at first doubles, before sophomores Valdemar Holm and Matthew John won their match in a tiebreak, 7-6, at third doubles.
Nittolo was the first to finish singles for UB with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at second singles, while sophomore Nickolas Frisk then won at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-3. Koay clinched the match for the Bulls at third singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Fridell continued the strong play for the Bulls at first singles, winning 6-2, 6-3. Wibler then came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win at sixth singles and Holm finished the sweep with a three-set win at fifth singles. After winning the first set, his opponent came back in the second, but Holm scored an 11-9 win in the super tiebreaker to clinch the match.
"I'm proud of the way we competed at every spot," said head coach Lee Nickell. "If we compete like that we will give ourselves a chance to win any of the matches left on the schedule. We are looking forward to competing like this again next weekend against Penn State."
The Bulls will head to Penn State on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
