TOLEDO, OH – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team picked up its fourth Mid-American Conference victory of the season on Friday as the Bulls defeated Toledo 4-3 on the road, UB's final regular season road contest of the year.
The Bulls won the doubles point, which ended up being the difference as the two squads split the six singles matches. Toledo took the doubles match at third doubles, but UB came away with wins at one and two. At first doubles, Hao Sheng Koay and Ethan Nittolo scored a 6-3 win, propelling Nittolo into the record books as he became UB's winningest doubles player. Junior Vilhelm Fridell and sophomore Nickolas Frisk also won their match at second doubles, 4-3.
In singles action, the Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Koay won at third singles, 6-2, 6-3. Fridell then claimed a win at second singles 6-4, 7-5, pulling Buffalo ahead 3-0. The last four singles matches all went three sets.
After Toledo won hard fought matches at fourth and sixth singles, the Bulls clinched the match as Nittolo was able to overcome a first set loss to win at first singles, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Rockets won the final match at fifth singles, with two of the three sets going into tiebreakers.
"Today was a really hard fought win and I am really proud of the team," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Ethan really came through for us today, never quitting even when his opponent was playing exceptionally well. Without Ethan's resilience we could have lost. Nick, Simon and Matt were dominant at the start, and just couldn't keep the momentum going to finish things out. Sunday is going to be another huge challenge, but it's nice to be at home four our last two regular season matches."
The Bulls will host Northern Illinois at 12:30 pm at the Miller Tennis Center. Sunday's promotions will include free UB buffs for the first 100 fans and double UB Reward app points for students.
