BUFFALO, NY - The successful start to the 2014 season kept on going Monday afternoon for the University at Buffalo softball team as seniors Holly Luciano and Tori Speckman were named the MAC East Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The duo helped lead the Bulls to a 2014 Lion Classic title and their first ever 6-0 start to a season.
Luciano started all six games in center field and she hit .529 (9-for-17). Luciano drove in nine runs over the weekend, surpassing her RBI total from all of last season already. In the doubleheader sweep of Southern, she had six runs batted in during the second game as the Bulls scored a school-record 19 runs. Over her nine hits, she had one double, one triple and one home run. When she wasn't doing it from the plate, she was doing it with her glove. In a 1-0 win over Nicholls St. on Sunday, Luciano had all three putouts in the seventh inning, including a diving catch into the gap, taking away a sure lead off extra base hit. She finished the opening weekend as one of three players on the team hitting over .400.
Speckman went 4-0 over the first weekend of the season as she was nearly unstoppable in the circle. She finished the weekend with just a 0.56 ERA as she allowed just two runs in 25.0 innings pitched. Speckman scattered just 17 hits over the four performances as she struck out 26 batters and walked just three. Speckman finished the weekend with two shutouts and three complete games. She led a Buffalo pitching staff that finished the weekend with a 1.62 ERA, allowing just 10 runs all weekend over the six games.
"With the level of work and determination that both Tori and Holly showed in the Fall and in our early practices it was no surprise to see the success they had," said head coach Trena Peel. "Tori was dominant in the circle all weekend and Holly started the weekend off on a high note with her performance from the plate at Southern."
The Bulls are off this weekend, but will return to action on Feb. 21 at the Red and Blue Classic in Oxford, MS.
