BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo senior shortstop Sammi Gallardo has been named the MAC East Softball Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning. The honor comes following a week that saw Gallardo hit six home runs in six games.
Gallardo batted .421 in UB's six games this past week, as she hit six home runs, setting the single-season home run record with 11. Gallardo slugged an impressive 1.421 as she finished with eight hits, seven of those for extra bases. Gallardo became so unstoppable at the plate that she was intentionally walked three times over the weekend in the series with Eastern Michigan. Twice during the week, Gallardo had multi-home run games, marking the first time in school history that a player has had more than one multi-home run game in the same season and she is only the second player to do it in her Buffalo career. Gallardo has now hit 25 home runs in her career, just two shy of the all-time school record.
Gallardo's strong week has moved her into the top 25 nationally in home runs per game and she now sits second in the Mid-American Conference with her 11 long balls. She is currently third in the conference in total bases and slugging percentage and tied for ninth in the league in runs batted in.
The Bulls continue play at home this Friday as they host Bowling Green for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
