BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo softball head coach Trena Peel has announced the hiring of Abby Martin as assistant coach. Martin, who will be responsible for the UB pitching staff, comes to UB after serving as an assistant coach at SUNY Cortland.
"Abby is a very motivated individual that will fit in well with our coaching style and philosophy," said Peel. "She brings tremendous passion to the job and she is extremely knowledgeable about the game. She has had a lot of success as both a player and a coach at Cortland and we look forward to welcoming her to the UB family."
Martin served for two seasons as an assistant coach at Cortland, which is her alma mater. This past season Cortland finished with a 28-15 record, finishing in second place in the SUNYAC. In Martin's first season on staff, the Red Dragons finished as the Division III National Runner Up, finishing with a 35-17 record. Martin was part of a staff that was named the NFCA DIII Northeast Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. During that year, the Cortland pitching staff finished with an ERA of 2.95. This past year, the pitching staff finished with an ERA of 2.86.
As a player, Martin had a 12-4 record during her senior season at Cortland, recording a 2.58 ERA as she struck out 97 batters in 84.0 innings. At the plate, Martin was the second leading hitter for the Red Dragons with a .393 batting average, with a team-best 18 doubles. She was named a Capital One Academic All-American selection that year.
Martin was named an NFCA All-Region selection in 2011 as she hit .360 with eight home runs and she was a perfect 8-0 in the circle with 53 strikeouts. Cortland went 42-5-1 during the 2011 season and finished fourth nationally. Martin began her career at Monmouth University where she played two seasons.
Martin received her Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology and her Master's of Science Degree in Sport Management both from Cortland.
