FT. COLLINS, CO - The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday at the Colorado State Classic as they lost to Idaho State and the host Colorado State Rams.
The Bulls dropped the opening game on Friday morning 21-9 to Idaho State as the Bengals scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Idaho State scored three in the top of the first, but the Bulls took a lead in the bottom of the inning as they scored four runs in the frame. Junior Leandra Jew scored on a passed ball and sophomore Catrell Robertson doubled to center scoring a run. Freshman Gabby Keller added an RBI single up the middle and she came in to score on an error by the Idaho State right fielder giving UB the 4-3 edge.
However, Idaho State scored two in the second and then five in the fourth to take a 10-4 lead. Buffalo added two in the bottom of the fourth on an error by the center fielder to cut it to 10-6. Idaho State scored one more in the fifth, but UB cut the lead to 11-9 with a three-run sixth inning. UB put two in scoring position with one out when Taylor Scott and Danielle Lallos both came in to score on wild pitches. Jew singled to center later in the inning, scoring freshman Jenelle Martinez.
The Bulls went into the seventh trailing, by just two, but that is when Idaho State scored 10 runs to take the 21-9 advantage. Buffalo had nine hits in the game, including two each from Jew and Robertson.
UB was better defensively and in the circle, but the offense went cold in the second game, which was a 3-0 loss to Colorado State. The Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the bottom of the fourth.
Sophomore Brieanna Baker pitched the complete game as she allowed six hits and two earned runs, while walking four and striking out two. The Bulls scattered five hits in the game, including two from Jew.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow when they face these same teams beginning with a matchup against Idaho State at 1:15 pm EST.
