TOLEDO, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team lost both games in a series opening doubleheader against the Toledo Rockets. UB lost the first game 6-3 and lost the second game 7-0.
The Bulls scored first in the opener in the second inning. Sophomore Catrell Robertson doubled to left field, which was followed by another double down the right field line by freshman Jessica Goldyn. With two runners in scoring position, freshman Jenelle Martinez doubled to center field scoring both Robertson and Goldyn. However, the Rockets answered back with a two-out RBI single from Megan Choate to come within one but the Bulls shut them down.
The Bulls were scoreless in the fourth inning but Toledo rallied to score four runs and take the 6-3 lead. Sophomore Ally Power took the loss as she pitched four innings and allowed four earned runs.
In game two, the Bulls struggled to make contact with the ball until the sixth inning when Power singled up the middle, which was followed by another single from junior Taylor Scott, but the Bulls were unable to score.
Senior Bobbi Langlois picked up the loss on the mound after 3.2 innings of work, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs.
"I thought we hit well enough to put us in a good situation to win game one," said head coach Trena Peel. "Today was about doing the little things right. We made too many mistakes in the bases in the first game that killed our rallies early on. Every out is very valuable. We can't just give outs away. We hit the ball right at people in game two. Toledo was solid defensively and we weren't. That was the difference in the game. We will take all the lessons of today and bounce back tomorrow stronger."
The Bulls will close out the series tomorrow with a make-up game that was originally scheduled to be played on Friday but was moved to Sunday due to rainy weather in Toledo. First pitch is set for 12 noon and the game can be watched on ESPN3.
