HAMPTON, VA – The University at Buffalo softball team (2-7, 0-0 MAC) opened their weekend at the Hampton Classic with a solid 8-3 victory over the Youngstown State Penguins on Friday afternoon at the Lady Pirates Softball Field. The Buffalo offense was able to produce 13 hits and six extra base hits in the victory on Friday.
The Penguins were able to open the scoring in the first inning as they crossed a pair of runs across home plate as UB starting pitcher Ally Power struggled to find the strike zone. Youngstown State earned four walks in the inning and scored a pair of runs on wild pitches before Power settled down and struck out the side to get out of the jam.
After opening the game with three scoreless innings, the Bulls bats finally woke up in the fourth inning as they struck for three runs to take the 3-2 lead. Anna Aguon opened the inning with a double to center field and Danielle Lallos followed with a RBI single to right field to score Aguon. Catrell Robertson then dug in and delivered a RBI triple to right field to plate Lallos before Jenelle Martinez earned the third RBI of the inning with a single to left field.
The Penguins responded with the tying run in the bottom of the fourth inning as they earned a single to start the inning and she came around to score on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Buffalo didn't waste any time taking the lead back as they plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the 6-3 lead and they never looked back. The Bulls opened the inning with a pair of outs before stringing together four hits and scoring three runs. Aguon started the run with a single to right field before Lallos knocked her in with a double to right field. After Lallos stole third, Robertson doubled to right field to plate Lallos before Martinez singled to center to plate Taylor Scott who pinch ran for Robertson.
The Bulls then added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 8-3 lead as Jessica Goldyn and Alyssa Cuevas hit back-to-back doubles to open the inning. Ufuoma Ogagan then collected a RBI to plate Goldyn before Aguon collected a RBI single to center to score Cuevas.
The Bulls were able to shut the Penguins down across the final two innings to take home the 8-3 victory.
In the circle, Power calmed down after the first inning and went 7.0 innings while allowing three hits, three runs and striking out a season-high eight batters in her second win of the season.
At the plate, UB was able to produce 13 hits as five batters collected multi-hit games in the win. Aguon led the way for UB going 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored while Robertson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run and Lallos went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Martinez finished off her afternoon going 2-for-4 with two RBI while Cuevas went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
The Bulls will return to the diamond in Virginia tomorrow morning at 9:00 am for their first of two games as they take on Lafayette. The second game of the day will take place at 1:30 pm as the Bulls will take on the host Hampton Pirates.
