HAMPTON, VA – The University at Buffalo softball team ran their winning streak to three straight games on Saturday afternoon as they collected a pair of victories on the second day of the Hampton Classic. The Bulls handed Lafayette a 3-2 defeat before downing the host Hampton Pirates, 4-2.
"I spoke about Lace Smith yesterday and she came through for us today," said head coach Mike Roberts. "Danielle Lallos had been in a little bit of a slump of late but I think her triple today helped show her what she's capable of."
In the first game of the day against Lafayette, junior pitcher Lace Smith had a great game inside the circle as she was able to go 7.0 innings while allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out a season-high six batters in her first win of the season.
Both sides struggled offensively early on Saturday as the pitchers were able to hold both sides scoreless through four innings. The Leopards were finally able to break through with the first runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as Stacy Gordon opened the inning with a home run to left field. The Leopards then made it 2-0 as Ellen McDonnell reached base on an error and moved over to third before stealing home.
Buffalo didn't waste any time getting back into the game as they were able to tie the game, 6-6, in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Anna Aguon opened the inning with a single down the left field line before Danielle Lallos delivered a RBI triple to right field to plate Aguon. After an out, Jenelle Martinez dug in and delivered a RBI single up the middle to score Lallos from third.
After Smith was able to work out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bulls were able to take the 3-2 lead as Taylor Scott walked to open the inning and Aguon delivered with a RBI triple to right field to score Scott from second.
Smith went on to strike out a pair of batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the Bulls 3-2 victory over the Leopards.
Aguon was able to go 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run while Martinez went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Lallos continued to swing a hot bat as she went 1-for-4 with a RBI and a run in the win.
In the second game of the day, the Bulls were able to collect their third straight win as they downed the Lady Pirates 4-2.
UB was able to score a pair of runs in the top of the first inning as Leandra Jew reached base on an error before she stole third base and scored on an Aguon single up the middle. Martinez then dug in and delivered with a RBI single to right field to score Aguon from second base and give the Bulls the early 2-0 lead.
The Lady Pirates were able to score a run in the bottom of the second and bottom of the third innings on RBI singles to tie the game, 2-2.
Both pitchers settled down over the next three innings as neither team was able to score a run. Ally Power was able to work a pair of 1-2-3 innings before working around a leadoff single in the sixth inning to shut down Hampton.
Buffalo was able to take over the lead and eventual win in the top of the seventh inning as Martinez led off the inning with a double to center field before coming around to score on a Jessica Goldyn RBI single to left field. Ufuoma Ogagan was then able to make it 4-2 in favor of the Bulls as she connected on a RBI double to plate Goldyn.
After the Lady Pirates opened the seventh inning with a walk, Power was able to strikeout back-to-back batters and forced a groundout to second base to end the game.
Martinez finished off her day with another two-hit game as she went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run while Aguon and Goldyn each went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run in the win. In the circle, Power went 7.0 innings while allowing six hits, two runs and striking out five batters.
