Softball Edged Out By La Salle In Opening Game Down In Madeira Beach

MADEIRA BEACH, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team saw their four game winning streak snapped on Friday morning as the La Salle Explorers snuck past the Bulls, 3-2. The UB offense just couldn't get anything going as they collected just four hits in the game.

La Salle was able to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning after the Bulls went 1-2-3 to open the game. Emma Schweigert led off the inning with a solo home run to give the Explorers the 1-0 lead but Ally Power was able to settle in and retire the next eight batters for La Salle.

The Bulls stranded Jenelle Martinez on base after a single in the second inning and La Salle was able to extend their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. After Power struck out the first two batters of the inning, the Explorers notched a single and a walk before Ashley Mendenhall doubled to center field to plate a pair of runners.

Buffalo was finally able to produce a run in the top of the fourth inning as Anna Aguon opened the inning with a walk and Catrell Robertson notched a double to left field to give UB two runners in scoring position with one out. Martinez then stepped in and recorded her team-leading 14th RBI of the season as she hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

After a quick bottom half of the fourth inning, UB was able to inch within one run as Jessica Goldyn opened the fifth with a triple to right field. Ufuoma Ogagan then stepped in and picked up a RBI as she notched a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Goldyn from third and make the score 3-2 in favor of the explorers.

Power was able to set down the Explorers in order over the next two innings, sending the game to the final inning with the Bulls trailing by one. The Bulls weren't able to produce the game-tying run after Alissa Karjel earned a walk to put the tying run on base.

Martinez finished off her afternoon going 1-for-2 with a RBI while Aguon went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Goldyn was able to go 1-for-3 with her fifth run scored of the game in the loss.

In the circle, Power picked up her fifth loss of the season despite pitching pretty well for the Bulls. She was able to go 6.0 innings while allowing just four hits, three runs and striking out seven batters.

The Bulls will return to the diamond tomorrow with a pair of games. UB will open the day against Incarnate Word at 1:30 pm before finishing the day against Alabama State at 6:30 pm.
