Clearwater, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team (8-11, 0-0 MAC) split the opening day at the Clearwater Spring Break Classic hosted by the University of South Florida.
The Bulls opened their first game of the evening strong against the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers. All nine hitters made a plate appearance in the first inning and scored three runs. In the second inning, they sent eight batters to the dish and scored an additional three runs. The Bulls rattled the starting pitcher for the Lady Rattlers as she only lasted 1.3 innings. Relief pitcher Veronica Burse calmed the Bulls down until the sixth inning. After a pair of outs to start things off, sophomore Jenelle Marinez singled to the shortstop to reach base safely and her next three teammates recorded hits to add an additional three runs. The final run crossed the plate in the top of the seventh to give the Bulls their tenth run of the game, the most runs they have ever scored in a single game so far this season.
Ally Power pitched a complete seven-inning game and only gave up two runs off four hits.
The Bulls had almost the entire squad record multiple hits. Sophomore Jessica Goldyn was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate. Leandra Jew, Catrell Robertson, and Jessica Goldyn recorded doubles. Senior Danielle Lallos recorded the lone 2-RBI triple.
In game two of the evening, the Bulls fell victim to the North Florida Ospreys. The lone run for the Bulls came in the top of the first after the leadoff batter Anna Aguon was hit by the second pitch of her at bat. Aguon stole second and came home to score thanks to Martinez doubling up the middle. Unfortunately, the bats went cold as the sun went down as they only record one more hit for the entire game. The North Florida Ospreys scored five runs off 13 hits. Lace Smith had a total of five innings of work in the circle after starting the game, letting Brieanna Baker work for two innings, then came back to end the game.
The Bulls return the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex for a pair of games tomorrow. They will face Army at 9:45am EDT then face Quinnipiac at 12:00 pm EDT.
