ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team (15-27, 6-12 MAC) fell on Friday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game series on the road at first-place Ohio, 9-1. Sophomore Jenelle Martinez notched the lone RBI in the loss for UB as she now has a career-high and team-best 33 runs batted in on the year.
After a scoreless first inning by the Bulls, the Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Mikayla Cooper opened the inning with a triple and Alex Day singled to score the games first run and give the home team the 1-0 lead through one inning.
The Bulls notched a hit in each of the next two innings but weren't able to score a run. The Bobcats responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the 5-0 lead through three innings.
After the Bobcats added three more runs in the fourth inning to take the 8-0 lead, the Bulls were able to score their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Leandra Jew earned a walk and Martinez delivered a RBI double to center field to make the score 8-1 in favor of Ohio.
Ohio ended the game in the bottom of the fifth as they earned a leadoff single and stolen base before Katie Yun delivered the game-ending RBI single through the left side.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday afternoon as they will play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm. Game two will begin approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the first game at the Ohio Softball Stadium.
