Softball Opens Season at Titan Classic

Team huddle.

BUFFALO, NY – First year interim head coach Mike Ruechel will make his head coaching debut this weekend as the Bulls open up their 2019 campaign at the Titan Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. UB will take part in five games this weekend in Fullerton, California.

"We're very excited for the 2019 season to get underway," Ruechel said. "It's been a few months since we were able to practice outside. Our infielders are looking forward to the dirt and our outfielders are looking forward to seeing fly balls. With a handful of our athletes being from out west we are expecting a good turnout for our first weekend."

The Bulls are coming off a 16-31 campaign last year, including a 3-16 mark in MAC play. Buffalo will return 10 players from last season led by first-team All-MAC selection Anna Aguon, who posted a .359 batting average to go along with a team-high seven home runs, 36 runs scored and 35 RBI while leading the squad with a .633 slugging percentage and a .451 on base percentage and Jenelle Martinez who earned second-team All-MAC honors, posting a career-best .364 batting average to go along with six home runs, a team-high 37 RBI and 19 runs scored while recording a .550 slugging percentage and a .406 on base percentage.

UB returns three of their top five hitters from a season ago as Martinez was second on the team last season in batting average at .364 with six home runs and 37 RBI while junior Aguon ranked third on the team in batting average at .359 with seven home runs, 35 RBI and 36 runs scored. Fellow junior Ufuoma Ogagan played in 44 games a season ago, batting .258 with 13 RBI and 18 runs scored.

Senior Ally Power returns after leading the Bulls in the circle with a 4.53 ERA while striking out 111 batters.

In addition, the Bulls will welcome seven newcomers to the squad in 2019. Sophomore Alicia Peters comes to Buffalo after spending a season at Sierra College and junior Gianna Zarcone who transferred from Hutchinson Central Technical (ECC). Playing in their first collegiate weekend for the Bulls will be Alexis Matheney, Olivia Kincanon, Hannah Bardeen, Kassidy Aiken and Damaris Sutherland.

The Bulls will begin the season at 1 p.m. on Friday against University of the Pacific before taking on the host Cal State Fullerton Titans at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Buffalo will open up play at 1 p.m. as they take on Louisville before wrapping day two against Idaho State at 3:30 p.m.

UB rounds out their opening weekend with a 2:30 p.m. contest against the Loyola Marymount Lions.
