BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team split their Mid-American Conference opening doubleheader against Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon. The Bulls won the first game 8-4 before dropping the second game 10-4.
In the first game, NIU took the early lead scoring all four of their runs in the first four innings. The Bulls waited until the fifth inning to make some noise but did so in a big way, scoring seven runs on five hits. Alexis Matheney, Jenelle Martinez, Catrell Robertson and Alissa Karjel all recorded an RBI in the inning.
The Bulls would get an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Anna Aguon notched a one-out triple to right field and Martinez brought her home on a SAC fly to center field. Aguon finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game of the afternoon NIU struck first again scoring six runs on three hits in the second inning. The Bulls would respond in the bottom frame recording four runs but the Huskies would add an additional two runs in the third and fourth innings to secure the victory.
"It's nice to start off conference play with a win," head coach Mike Ruechel said. "We competed and had a great offensive day. If we just tighten up a few loose ends and continue to have quality at bats like today we will be in a lot of ball games."
The Bulls continue their home stand next weekend as they look to host Central Michigan for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 29, at 3 pm.
