BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated Akron in walkoff fashion, 6-5, at Nan Harvey Field on Wednesday. The Bulls earned their first conference series win of the season and improve to 7-23-1 overall, 4-3-1 in league play.
The Zips struck first in the top of the first, scoring a run on a UB error to take an early 1-0 lead but the Bulls would answer in the bottom of the inning as Jenelle Martinez blasted a two-run home run to right center to give UB a 2-1 lead.
Akron threatened in the top of the second but Ally Power escaped the jam with a fly out to right field to end the inning and then worked a 1-2-3 top of the third to maintain a one run lead.
The Bulls would add a pair of insurance runs as Anna Aguon smacked a single through the left side and Martinez connected on her second home run of the day, another two-run shot, this time to straightaway center, to extend the UB lead to 4-1.
Freshman Olivia Kincanon got in on the home run party as she blasted a line drive over the wall in right center to give the Bulls a 5-1 lead.
Akron battled back in the top of the seventh scoring four runs on four hits, including a two-run home run, to tie the game 5-5, knocking Power out of the game. Lace Smith would come on in relief and record back-to-back strikeouts to end the half inning.
The Bulls would have the last laugh as Alicia Peters sent a solo shot over the wall in left center field to give UB the 6-5 walkoff victory.
Martinez finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored, while Aguon finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Kincanon went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. In the circle, Power gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out three batters in 4.2 innings of work, while Smith picked up her fourth win of the season in two innings of relief. The four home runs by the Bulls tied a UB single-game record.
"Great to see the bats come alive today, head coach Mike Ruechel said. "This gives us great momentum going into the weekend. We have a tough series ahead of us so we'll have to continue to do what we've been doing and stay competitive."
Up next, the Bulls travel to Bowling Green, Ohio for a three game series with the Falcons beginning Friday, April 12, at 3 pm.
