Bulls Offense Comes Alive in 12-3 Win at St. Bonaventure

Catrell Robertson

BUFFALO, NY – The sun was out and the bats came alive as the University at Buffalo softball team blasted three home runs in a dominating 12-3 win at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulls got on the board quickly as Alexis Matheney led off with a single up the middle and stole second and then Alicia Peters connected on an RBI single to left to score Matheney. Later in the inning, Catrell Robertson came within inches of a grand slam with a shot to straightaway center field but instead came up with a bases-clearing double to put UB up 4-0.

Matheney got things going again in the second with a solo home run over the wall in left to extend the lead to 5-0. Back-to-back singles by Anna Aguon and Jenelle Martinez and a Peter's walk loaded the bases and Gabby Keller came up big, lining a two-RBI single to left and later an Alissa Karjel sac fly gave UB a 8-0 lead.

The Bonnies scored two runs in the bottom of the second but the Bulls answered in the top of the third as Aguon smacked an RBI single up the middle, scoring Hannah Bardeen, to put UB up 9-2.

The long ball continued to fly in the top of the fifth as Jenna Richmond blasted her first career home run over the wall in straightaway center, a two-run shot, and Martinez got in on the fun with a solo shot of her own to extend the UB lead to 12-2 and that would be all the Bulls would need to secure the victory.

Matheney, Aguon and Martinez all recorded multiple hits for the Bulls on the afternoon. It was the fifth double-digit hit performance for the Bulls this season. In the circle, Ally Power gave up just one hit and struck out five batters in four innings of work. Lace Smith allowed one run on two hits in one inning of relief.

Up next, the Bulls return home to host Kent State in a three-game series at Nan Harvey Field beginning Friday, April 26, at 3 pm.
