CLEVELAND, OH – The Mid-American Conference released its men's and women's swimming and diving preseason polls on Friday. The University at Buffalo men's team ranked third and the women's team ranked fourth in polls voted on by MAC coaches.
The men are coming off a season in which they finished third at the 2013 MAC Championships. The Bulls are led by Mike Dugan. The Bulls' senior won two individual titles and was part of three winning relay squads at the MAC Championships on his way to a spot on the first-team All-MAC squad last season.
The women' s squad finished fifth at the 2013 MAC Championships. The Bulls are led by the duo of Brittney Kuras and Mallory Morrell. Kuras has been the MAC's Outstanding Swimmer each of the last two seasons. She won three individual titles taking the 100- and 200-yard freestyles as well as the 200-yard individual medley to defend her league crown in all three races in 2013. She was also part of UB's winning 200-, 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams.
Morrell finished a memorable season as the first UB Division I women's swimmer to attain NCAA Honorable Mention honors as she finished 13th in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.46 at the national meet in Indianapolis. She won the MAC title in the 50-yard freestyle, setting league and school records of 22.24 and was part of UB's winning 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams while also finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle (season best 49.47). At the NCAA Championships, she also finished 59th in the 100-yard freestyle (50.17).
The 2013-14 season begins on Saturday when the Bulls host the Western New York Invite.
