BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving team capped off a successful opening day at the 2018 Zippy Invitational as the team currently sits in second place overall on an afternoon that saw a school record being broken.
Buffalo sits in second place in the field of 10 teams after day one of competition at the Zippy Invitational held at Ocasek Natatorium with an overall team score of 482.5, behind only the host team Akron. The Bulls currently hold a 101.5 point lead over the third placed team, MAC foe Bowling Green.
The Buffalo 400 yard medley team of sophomore Nicole Roitenberg, junior Anna Vitolins, junior Andrea Ernst and junior Katelyn Burns saw the school record in the event fall as they swam to a second place finish with a time of 3:41.17, breaking the former school record time of 3:43.49 set in 2017.
The Bulls picked up another second place relay finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay, as Ernst, senior Catherine Schultheis, sophomore Jillian Lawton and Burns finished with a time of 1:31.18, .68 seconds behind the first place team from Akron.
Sophomore Brittney Beetcher was able to collect a victory on the day for the Bulls, as she swam to victory in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.73 in the distance event.
In the 200 yard IM event, sophomore Olivia Sapio had a second place finish with a time of 2:00.45. The finishing time was a career-best for Sapio.
Competition resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. for preliminaries, followed by diving prelims at 1:30 p.m. and concluding with finals at 5 p.m.
