BUFFALO, NY – A trio of UB track and field athletes will participate in the United States Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships, which are being held at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon on July 5-6. Freshman Corinne Birchard, Christine Lyttle and Alec Peinkofer will all be showcasing their talents on the national stage as they have each qualified for one event.
The competition is for all the best athletes in the country under the age of 20, including high school standouts and the nation's most promising freshman athletes. All four UB athletes had standout freshman campaigns, which allowed them the opportunity to participate in this historic event.
On the men's side, the long Bull to qualify for an event was Peinkofer in the 3,000m steeplechase. In the field of 15, Peinkofer currently ranks fourth with a season-best time of 9:03.45 coming at the MAC Outdoor Championships as he took home third place in the event.
On the women's side, Birchard had a great freshman season for the Bulls, as she was able to qualify in the 1,500m run. Birchard's time of 4:33.84 came at the MAC Outdoor Championships as she took home a ninth place finish in the event. Lyttle qualified in the 100m hurdles event following a season, which saw her take over as the teams best in the event. Lyttle recorded a career-best time of 14.05 seconds en route to a seventh place finish at the MAC's.
The 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships will serve as a qualifier for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships. Top performers will be part of the American team that will have the unique opportunity to return to Eugene from July 22-27. The 2014 edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships marks the first time the event has ever been held in the United States.
