NEW ORLEANS, LA – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York's senior thrower Jonathan Jones was named Northeast Region Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year Monday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He was also honored on March 7, earning USTFCCCA Northeast Region Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year recognition.
Jones, a five-time All-American in the shot put, won the event in record-setting fashion at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships on May 15. He threw 20.33 meters to snap the 1978 MAC Championship meet record and the 1986 facility record on his sixth and final attempt.
This spring, Jones ranks fourth in the nation with a heave of 20.70 meters recorded April 4 at the Florida Relays. Just five centimeters shy of his school record, he set new meet and facility records that had stood since 2008, to take gold. Most recently he had a 19.95-meter toss at the NCAA East Preliminaries to finish third and secure his third straight trip to the outdoor national meet.
Jones and juniors Ryan Billian and Mike Morgan will compete June 10-12 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Oregon. Morgan will compete in the decathlon Wednesday and Thursday with events starting at 2:30 pm and 1 pm, respectively. Billian's 100-meter dash semifinal is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:16 pm, while the finals will follow on Friday at 8:25 pm. The shot put is slated for 8:30 pm Wednesday. All times have been converted to Eastern Standard Time.
