BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo track and field sophomore Brandon Burke was named Track & Field Athlete of the Week by the Mid-American Conference for his record-breaking performance in the high jump event over the weekend at the Jim Thorpe Invitational hosted by Penn State University, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first time in Burke's career that he was given the nod for the recognition from the conference.
Burke earned the honors after a head-turning performance last Friday on Nittany Lion Track, leaping over the bar at a height of 7'2.50" (2.20m), a new program record. The mark, a new career-best for the sophomore, currently ranks him first in the MAC and 12th in the entire NCAA, the highest any UB student-athlete has been ranked since Bulls shot put specialist Jon Jones claimed a national championship for Buffalo during the 2015 outdoor season.
Burke and his Bulls teammates look to take the momentum into next week as they are slated to compete in the 2019 MAC Outdoor Championships, hosted by Ball State University on May 9-11.
