BUFFALO, NY - Fresh off of a stellar performance on the mat at the Mid American Conference championship, where he won the 165-pound championship, junior John-Martin Cannon was named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week for his performance in the classroom.
Cannon (3.355, elementary education) won his weight class and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the MAC Championships. Cannon defeated two 2010 NCAA national qualifiers - Kent State's Ross Tice and Central Michigan's Mike Miller - to earn the title. Cannon (27-16) will be one of a record six Bulls who will compete at the NCAA Championships, and it will be his second straight trip to the national tournament. The NCAA tournament will run from Mar. 17-19, with Cannon facing Lehigh's Brandon Hatchett in the first round.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
