BUFFALO, NY - The National Wrestling Coaches Association has announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Teams and the NWCA Individual All-Academic wrestling team. Following successful seasons both on the mat and in the classroom, junior John-Martin Cannon and redshirt junior Kevin Smith were named to the 2010-11 NWCA All-Academic Division I Team.
This is the second straight year that the two wrestlers were named to the team, and both have also been named to the Mid American Conference's All-Academic Team.
Cannon made his second appearance at the NCAA tournament after winning the 165-pound bracket at the Mid American Conference championship, beating the top two seeds in the process. He also won a career-high 27 matches, including eight dual wins, and finished second on the team with 38 takedowns.
Smith also made his second trip to the NCAA tournament this past season, earning an at-large bid after leading the team in overall wins, taking a career-best 35 matches. His 35 wins ranks among the best in the nation for any weight class and is tied for second in the nation among 133 pound Division I wrestlers. He also became the tenth wrestler in program history to reach 100 career takedowns after taking his opponent down 29 times in dual meets.
There were 92 total athletes, three NCAA Champions, five NCAA Runner-Ups, 28 All-Americans and 83 NCAA Qualifiers on this year's list. The Mid American Conference had five wrestlers make the list, with Buffalo being the only team with two.
