HEMPSTEAD, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team couldn't capitalize on a tremendous start and lost to Hofstra, 22-17, in a non-conference dual at the Mack Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the dual, but the Pride rallied for the win.
Kyle Akins led things off with a 6-4 decision over Jacob Martin at 125 to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. With the win, Akins improved to 8-3 in duals on the year.
Bryan Lantry followed with a third-period pin of Garrett Lambert to extend the Buffalo lead to 9-0. Lantry's pin, his first of the season, came 36 seconds into the final period.
At 141, Jason Estevez had one of his best performances of the year. The UB senior earned a 25-10 technical fall over Charlie Kane. Just like that, the Bulls led, 14-0.
However, the Pride battled back and won the next four matches, including a pin of their own, to take a 15-14 lead heading into the 184 lb. match.
Brett Perry seemed to steady the ship for the Bulls as he earned a 6-5 decision over Cory Damiama at 184 to regain a 17-15 advantage for the Bulls.
Unfortunately for UB, Joe Ariola dropped a 10-5 decision at 197 and Nolan Terrance, getting his first start in a dual this season, was majored at 285, to allow Hofstra to win the dual's final two matches.
"This season has been tough," head coach John Stutzman said. "Not because the talent isn't there, but because the work was not put in to be great."
Buffalo (5-8, 2-3 MAC) will next wrestle at Eastern Michigan on Feb. 2.
