CLEVELAND, OH – Bryan Lantry won his opening match and went 1-1 on the day to advance to Friday action at the NCAA Championships at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday. It marks the second straight year the redshirt-junior has advanced past the first day.
Lantry earned a 4-1 decision over Northwestern's Colin Valvidiez in his opening bout. After a scoreless first period, Valvidiez earned an escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the second, Lantry got the takedown to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. After Valvidiez rode Lantry for most of the third period, Lantry earned a late reversal for the 4-1 victory.
Lantry had a tough test in the second round, going up against fourth-seeded Caid Brock of Oklahoma State. Brock earned two first-period takedowns to take control of the match. Brock went on to earn the 10-3 decision.
Gunning dropped his first match of the NCAAs. The UB heavyweight struggled to get anything going and lost a 6-0 decision to 11th-seeded Mike Hughes of Hofstra. Gunning was forced to take a medical forfeit in his second bout, ending his NCAA Championships.
Lantry will wrestle Rutgers' Scott Delvecchio in his next bout. Lantry defeated Delvecchio, 4-3, at Midlands back in December.
