Bulls Kick Off Spring Rowing Season Against Strong Competition in Clemson, SC

CLEMSON, SC – After a week of spring training in South Carolina, the University at Buffalo women's rowing team competed against some of the nation's best rowing programs on Saturday. Hosted by Clemson University, the Bulls also went up against Duke, Iowa, Kansas and Purdue.

In the Varisty Eight race, the Bulls finished fourth with a time of 6:59.79. The boat was made up of Emily Glasgow, Justine Bottorff, Melissa Ward, Haley Fanco, Samantha Paige, Heide MacMahon, Meghan O'Brien, Sara-Ann Fox and Kaitlyn Koscielniak.

Clemson won the race with a time of 6:42.69. The Bulls finished just four seconds out of third place and finished ahead of Kansas (7:05.13) and Purdue (7:24.50).

The Second Varsity Eight boat of Alyssa Porter, Katie Coffin, Jean Kang, Sarah Goodman, Colleen Patterson, Alyssa Gabel, Jessica Levy, Alexa Shoiock and Clare Costello finished fifth in their race, beating out Purdue by four seconds.

In the Varsity Four race, UB finished fifth with a time of 8:10.82. The boat was made up of Caeleigh Heavey, Jordyn Phillips, Mackenzie Turpin, Erica Tenteromano and Anna Lipinska. The Bulls finished nearly one minute ahead of six-place Purdue.

UB's Novice Eight competed in the Third Varsity Eight race and Ally Mayo, Rebecca McGinn, Ellen Lutnick, Sydney Dudish, Jillian Michael, Kassandra Kimmey, Rylee James, Emily Garrison and Jessica Tomasello finished sixth with a time of 7:37.37.

Finally, in the Fourth Varsity Eight race, UB finished third with a time of 7:37.73. The boat of Catey Gibbons, Allyssa Cotton, Nicole Ciesielski, Katie Brown, Meg Allen, Alexa Zeliger, Kelsey Sharp, Ellie Bortiatynski and Morgan Obrochta finished just one second behind second place Duke and 25 seconds ahead of Purdue. 

After returning to Buffalo, the Bulls will next compete at the Murphy Cup in New Jersey next Saturday.
