BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MAC) return to Western New York on Tuesday night as they close out a three-match road trip at crosstown rival Canisius College. The Bulls and Golden Griffins will kick off at 7:00 pm and the match will air on ESPN3.
The Bulls return to the pitch after dropping a tough road match against Big Ten opponent Ohio State on Saturday night by the score of 3-0. The Bulls held the Buckeyes to one first half goal but the home squad dominated the second half and collected the 3-0 victory while holding the 26-5 edge in shots.
Despite allowing three goals to the Buckeyes, senior Laura Dougall had another strong match between the pipes as she finished off her night with a career-high 12 saves. Dougall has now gathered back-to-back 10+ save efforts for the first time in her UB career. The midfield tandem of Moira Petrie and Julia Benati had a strong match as Benati had a dangerous opportunity but just sailed a free kick over the top corner of the net. Sophomore Carley Zoccali made her second career start and notched a team-high two shots in the loss.
The Golden Griffins enter Tuesday night's game with a 1-1-0 record after defeating Youngstown State 1-0 in overtime in their home opener and falling at MAC opponents Toledo on the road, 2-0. Sophomore Madeline Beaulieu netted the overtime winner for the Griffs against Youngstown State with Emily Czechowski gathering the helper on the goal. In goal, sophomore Alana Rossi has started both games and owns a 0.98 goals-against average while making nine saves. Rossi collected a cleansheet against Youngstown State as she made four saves in the win.
The meeting between the two programs will be the 42nd in series history with the Bulls owning the commanding 27-10-4 edge over the Griffs. The Bulls have won five straight meetings against the Golden Griffins with Canisius last winning a match against UB in 2010. Buffalo collected a 3-0 victory over their Big 4 foe last season at UB Stadium.
The Bulls will open their home slate of matches on Sunday night as they welcome the Youngstown State Penguins to UB Stadium at 7:00 pm. Sunday's match will be the first of three straight and five of the next six contests at home for the Bulls.
