COLORADO SPRINGS, CO –The University at Buffalo women's tennis team had a strong finish over the final two days of the USAFA Women's Tennis Invitational on the campus of the Air Force Academy. The weekend was highlighted by a singles flight championship from senior Anamaria Candanoza.
Candanoza won the Charlie Flight singles championship as she went a perfect 3-0 in singles play during the weekend. Candanoza defeated Silviya Zhelyazkova of Wyoming, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Also playing the flight was senior Marta Stoyanova, who concluded action today with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the consolation bracket.
Senior Miranda Podlas overcame a first-day loss as she played in the consolation finals of the Alpha Flight singles, but dropped her match today after winning the first 6-2. Fellow senior Tanvi Shah won her final match on the consolation side, 6-1, 6-4.
Junior Laura Fernandez played in the Bravo Flight, while freshman Margarita Kotok went 3-1 in round robin play in the Delta Flight singles. She won her final match today against Lily Forlini from the Air Force, 6-1, 7-5.
In doubles action, Shah and Podlas claimed the Consolation Championship in the Alpha Flight doubles bracket. After dropping their opening match, the duo won three straight contests including an 8-4 victory today over a pair from New Mexico. Stoyanova and Kotok won their final match today, 8-7.
The Bulls will come back closer to home next weekend as they head up to the Niagara Invitational, beginning on Friday.
