CLEVELAND, OH - The Mid-American Conference Champion University at Buffalo women's tennis team placed three member on the Academic All-MAC Team, the conference office announced on Thursday afternoon. Honored for the Bulls were sophomores Chantal Martinez Blanco, Mercedes Losada Rubio, and Sanjana Sudhir.
Martinez Blanco is an Economics major with a 3.697 GPA. She was named second-team All-MAC for the second straight season as she enters the NCAA Tournament with a 20-11 record and a 9-6 mark at second singles, while also going 3-2 at first singles this year. Martinez Blanco was also extremely successful in doubles this year as she registered a 15-4 mark at second doubles with her partner Anna Savchenko. In all, Martinez Blanco is 19-7 overall in doubles action. Martinez Blanco was named the team's Most Improved Player.
Sudhir is also an Economics major with a 3.696 GPA. She was dominant at sixth singles for the Bulls this year as she went 10-3 from the six spot and 16-7 overall in singles action entering this weekend's NCAA Tournament. Sudhir also went 2-4 in doubles. At the end of the season she was give the team's "closer" award for her ability to clinch the overall victory from the singles spot. Sudhir was also awarded the MAC Commissioner's Award which recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a 3.5 minimum cumulative grade-point average after two semesters.
Losada Rubio is a Management major with a 3.601 GPA. She has gone 20-13 in singles action this year as she saw action at second, third, four, and fifth singles. She went 5-5 at third singles. In doubles, she went 5-5 at third doubles and 8-7 in doubles overall.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
The women's tennis team continues their season this weekend in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulls will face Ohio State, who is ranked #2 in the most recent national poll, on Saturday at 12:00pm.
