WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team dominated its first round matchup at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Tournament as the sixth-seeded Bulls defeated #3 Western Michigan, 5-0, in the quarterfinals.
The Bulls began the afternoon with an impressive performance in doubles, dropping just three games combined in wins at one and three. Buffalo got on the board with a 6-1 win at third doubles courtesy of junior Emel Abibula and freshman Hsin-Yuan Shih. UB then clinched the point with a 6-2 win at one from senior Chantal Martinez Blanco and freshman Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou.
Buffalo jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match as it picked up straight set victories at the bottom of the lineup. Abibula recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win at five and then senior Sanjana Sudhir won at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-4.
Despite the Bulls taking the first set in all six matches, the remaining four all went into a third set, with UB needing just one point to clinch the match. Almost simultaneously, UB's freshmen duo of Antoniou-Karademitrou and Pia Schwarz ended their matches, giving Buffalo the 5-0 win. Antoniou-Karademitrou won first at third singles with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win and just as her and her opponent met at center court, Schwarz capped off a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win.
"The energy out on the court today was amazing the entire afternoon," said head coach Kristen Maines. "The crowd was fantastic and we really fed off them. I am so proud of this team and we are excited to get back out on the court tomorrow."
