WASHINGTON, DC - The University at Buffalo volleyball team swept Coppin State 3-0 in the opening round of the Georgetown Classic on Friday afternoon to improve to 4-2 on the season. The Bulls have already matched their win total from a year ago.
After a tight opening set, it was all Buffalo in the second and third as UB won the match 25-22, 25-14, 25-14. UB outhit Coppin State, .260 to .067. Buffalo's best offensive set came in the final one as UB hit .370 as a team with 12 kills and just two errors.
All 12 Bulls that are healthy got into the match for the first time as head coach Blair Brown Lipsitz emptied her bench with the big lead. That allowed UB's three players from Virginia to see action close to their hometowns.
It was a balanced offensive approach as three players led the way with nine kills each. Junior Megan Wernette had nine kills and no errors on 13 swings as she hit .692. She also had four blocks. Freshman Andrea Mitrovic and sophomore Polina Prokudina each had nine kills as well. Sophomore Kristina Nieves chipped in seven kills and just one error.
The Bulls will continue action on Saturday with a pair of matches. UB will face James Madison at 11:00am and the host Georgetown at 7:00 pm.
