Errors Costly In 3-1 Loss At Miami (OH)

OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo volleyball team lost its third straight match on Thursday night as the Bulls fell 3-1 at Miami (OH).  The loss drops the Bulls to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in league play.

The RedHawks took the contest 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23 as Miami narrowly outhit UB, .203 to .185.  Both teams recorded 22 hitting errors and 14 service errors, but UB's came at clutch times that contributed to its undoing.

UB tied the opening set up late at 20-20, but Miami scored three straight points, including a costly out of rotation call for UB.  Buffalo was able to pull back within one at 23-22, but Miami scored the final two points of the set.  The RedHawks led for the majority of the second set before they came away with a 25-20 win to take the 2-0 lead in the match.

The RedHawks opened the third set on a 10-5 run and Miami continued to lead 14-12 when the Bulls scored three straight points as a kill from senior Cassie Shado gave Buffalo a 15-14 lead.  The RedHawks regained a 22-18 advantage, but UB responded by rattling off six straight points to take a 24-22 lead.  Shado had a pair of kills in the run and combined with setter Scout McLerran on a block.  Another kill by Shado gave UB the set, 25-23.

The fourth set was a tight one as another block from Shado and McLerran gave UB the 18-15 lead late.  The Bulls continued to lead 22-21 when Miami scored three straight points to take a 24-22 lead.  The Bulls fought off one set point, but the match ended on one of UB's 14 service errors.

Shado finished with 14 kills and just four errors as she hit .370.  Defensively, she led the UB blocking contingent with eight total blocks, including three solos.

Polina Prokudina also finished with 14 kills and led UB with 20 digs, tying her career high.  Junior Megan Wernette added 10 kills and just one error as she hit .429.

Freshman Andrea Mitrovic also had 10 kills, while chipping in eight digs.  McLerran had 44 assists, nine digs, three blocks, and a kill.

Junior libero Larra Bickelhaupt finished with 16 digs, while sophomore Hannah Watson added 12 digs.

Buffalo will remain on the road when it travels to Bowling Green for a 5:00pm match tomorrow.  That match will air on ESPN3.
