Bulls Drop Tough Four-Setter At Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo volleyball team fell in four sets on Friday evening at Bowling Green, dropping its fourth straight match.

The Falcons took the contest, 25-17, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21 as Bowling Green outhit Buffalo, .219 to .195. BGSU got out to a quick lead in the match opening an early 15-5 lead in the first set.  UB was able to cut the deficit in half as they pulled within 20-15, but the Falcons ended the set on a 5-2 run.

In the second set, the Bulls looked to be in control as a kill from junior Megan Wernette put UB ahead 17-10.  The Bulls continued to lead by seven at 19-12 when BG pulled back within four.  The Bulls found their way to set point, taking a 24-19 lead, but Bowling Green fought off five set points, scoring seven straight points to stun the Bulls and take the second, 26-24.

Buffalo came back out after the break and kept the match alive with a third set victory. A kill by freshman Andrea Mitrovic opened up a 14-10 lead and the Bulls extended that advantage to 18-12.  A kill by senior Cassie Shado clinched the set for the Bulls, 25-22, and moved the match into the fourth.

The Falcons led 17-13 in the fourth set when the Bulls scored five straight points as a kill from Shado put the Bulls ahead 18-17.  However, BGSU returned the favor with five straight of its own as the Falcons regained a 22-18 advantage.  UB would pull within 22-20, but never got any closer as the Falcons closed out the set and the match.

Mitrovic and Shado each finished with a match-high 16 kills as the two combined for just three errors on the night.  Mitrovic didn't have a hitting error until match point as she added 14 digs and a pair of blocks.

Shado had just two errors on the evening as she hit .400 and for the second straight night she finished with eight blocks.

Wernette had eight kills and a pair of service aces, while Polina Prokudina finished with seven kills and 16 digs.

Junior Larra Bickelhaupt had a career-high 22 digs in the match, while sophomore setter Scout McLerran added 11 digs and ran the UB offensive, finishing with 41 assists.

Junior Raven Jordan got the start at right side for Buffalo and she had three blocks, a pair of digs, and a kill.

The Bulls will return home next weekend as they host a pair of MAC West opponents.  UB will first face Northern Illinois on Friday evening at 6pm at Alumni Arena.
