BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team saw their comeback effort fall just short on Saturday night as the Bulls lost to Toledo, 3-2, inside of Alumni Arena. The Bulls are now 15-10 on the season and 8-6 in league play.
The Bulls got off to the quick start building a 20-11 lead in the opening set. Toledo would make a late rally, but a kill from senior Cassie Shado clinched the set to give UB the 1-0 lead.
Toledo fought back and took the second and third sets forcing the Bulls to win the final two if they were going to take the match. UB began to get back into the match beginning in the fourth set. Toledo led 16-15 when the Bulls scored two straight points to take the lead. Toledo regained a 23-22 edge, but the Bulls held them scoreless for the remainder of the set as back-to-back kills from Polina Prokudina and a kill by Megan Wernette gave the Bulls the 25-23 win, sending the match to a fifth set.
The Rockets got out to a 6-3 lead in the fifth, but the Bulls quickly tied it up with three points of their own. A kill by freshman Andrea Mitrovic gave Buffalo a 10-9 lead and a kill by Prokudina put the Bulls ahead 13-12, forcing Toledo to call its final time out. Out of the break, the Bulls served one into the net and then a UB attack error gave Toledo a match point. A kill by Emma Swope ended the contest clinching a 3-2 win for the Rockets.
Prokudina led the Bulls with 18 kills as she took 53 swings on the night. Wernette had 13 kills, while Shado added 11, hitting a team-high .348. Mitrovic finished with nine kills.
Sophomore Scout McLerran had a match-high 51 assists, while she added four kills and two aces.
Buffalo will close out the regular season next weekend when its hosts the top two teams in the MAC East in Bowling Green and Miami (OH). UB will first host the RedHawks on Friday evening at 6:00 pm.
