Women’s Cross Country Takes 11th At Penn State National Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University at Buffalo women's cross country squad put forth a strong effort on Friday morning against some of the top teams in the region at the Penn State National Open. The Bulls earned 11th place out of 17 squads as they earned the highest finish by any MAC school in the field.

Buffalo was able to finish just behind nationally ranked West Virginia while also finishing ahead of Lehigh, a squad that finished ahead of UB two weeks ago at the Paul Short Invite.

Pacing the Bulls for the fourth straight event was sophomore Stephanie Ward who was able to race to a 17th place finish out of 177 participants on Friday morning. Ward had a nice race against some top competition as she finished in 20:46, missing out on a top-10 performance by just four seconds. Fellow sophomore Sylvia Russell had her best race of the young season as she took home 28th place in a season-best time of 21:09. Senior Morgan Mahoney earned her highest finish of the season, 60th, as she was able to post a time of 21:41.

A trio of Buffalo runners were also able to post top-100 finishes on Friday, led by senior Laura Libruk who finished in 81st place in 22:10. Fellow senior Charlotte Molloy was able to take home 90th place in a season-best time of 22:28 while junior Rachel Barich collected the 96th place finish in 22:35

The UB cross country team will return to action tomorrow morning at the Canisius Alumni Invite. The full men's squad will participate while a few women's runners will compete as well. The event begins at 12:00 pm.
