Bulls Fall to Northern Illinois, 8-5

DEKALB, IL – The University at Buffalo softball team fell to Northern Illinois this afternoon, 8-5, dropping their record to 9-20 (1-2 MAC). Freshman Alyssa Ward hit her first collegiate home run to earn two RBIs for the Bulls.

The Bulls tallied five runs in an impressive second inning rally to take an early 5-0 lead. Jessica Griffin got things started for Buffalo, singling to left field. Pinch runner Kristen Gallipani successfully stole second and made it to third on a Northern Illinois error. Ward stepped up to the plate and slammed her first collegiate home run over the right field fence to earn two RBIs. Candice Sheehan reached base on a fielder's choice and made it to third on a single from Ashley Bertot. Bertot successfully stole second to set up Kristin Waldron for a two-run RBI single to left field. Waldron would round the bases and score an unearned run to give the Bulls their fifth and final run of the game. The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the bottom of the third to tie up the game. They went on to score another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and an extra insurance run in the bottom of fifth to run away with the game, as the Bulls were unable to put up another score.

Terese Diaz earned the start on the mound, striking out two batters in 2.1 innings. Sharon Barr came in as relief to pitch the final 3.2 innings, adding two strikeouts to the count.
The Bulls will have a chance to beat the Huskies Sunday afternoon when they take on Northern Illinois at 2:00 pm at NIU's Mary M. Bell Field.
