Bulls to Host Quad Meet at Niagara County Community Colllege

SANBORN, NY - The Buffalo wrestling team will aim for its first dual win of the season Sunday and will have three opportunities to do so as it hosts Bloomsburg, Gardner-Webb and Niagara County Community College for a quad meet. The event will start at 10 am and, due to renovations to Alumni Arena, will be held at Niagara County Community College.
The Bulls (0-6, 1-0 MAC) are coming off a 30-6 loss to Central Michigan on Saturday. The Bulls earned wins at 141 and 149 pounds and lost four other matches by three points or less. Senior Kevin Smith's win against Central Michigan was his 105th career win, putting him in sole possession of fourth place in the career win list and nine wins behind Gary Cooper for third place.
Bloomsburg is currently 5-3 this season, with all three losses coming against nationally ranked opponents. Last season Bloomsburg bested UB 21-12, though the Bulls still lead the all-time series 7-4-1. The Huskies are coached by John Stutzman, who was a standout wrestler at Buffalo from 1995-98. He won 95 matches and has the fourth-most career takedowns in UB history, with 135. Two 2010-11 national qualifiers return to the team with Frank Hickman and Mike Dessino. Hickman is the reigning EWL Wrestler of the Week while Dessino is ranked in the top 12 nationally and has seven wins by fall already this season.
Gardner-Webb (1-2, 0-2 SOCON) has had almost two weeks since its last competition, a 41-2 loss to Appalachian State in its first-ever Southern Conference home dual. The Bulldogs are in its first season in the SOCON and were picked to finish fourth in the preseason. Three national qualifiers return to the team from last season, highlighted by the Medved twins Alex (157 lbs) and Ryan (149 lbs). Buffalo and Gardner-Webb last met in the 2006-07 season, with Buffalo taking a 42-3 win.
Niagara County Community College sits at 4-1 in the NJCAA season, with two straight wins coming into the Sunday duals. The Seawolves are coached by Keith Maute, who is in his first season as head coach after 38-year head coach Eric Knuutila relinquished his role for a part-time position. In its recent home tournament, nine wrestlers placed in the top six.
