BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team ran into a hot pitching performance from Miami (OH) senior Jessica Simpson as the RedHawks swept a doubleheader from the Bulls by scores of 3-0 and 9-3. The losses drop Buffalo to 14-25 on the year and 4-11 in the MAC.
Simpson pitched a no-hitter in the first game as the RedHawks won 3-0 on three solo home runs, including two from Daniela Torres. The Bulls had just three base runners all game, with two coming in the bottom of the third.
Senior Holly Johnson started the first game and put up zeros over the first three innings before allowing the home run in the fourth. She allowed two more in the sixth inning before being replaced by fellow senior Haylee Land, who did not allow a hit in the final 1.2 innings, striking out one.
In game two, Buffalo got out to the early lead against Paige Myers, who started the game for the RedHawks. Freshman Karly Nevez reached base with a single to left field and then came in to score on a home run from fellow freshman Alexis Curtiss. The Bulls added another run in the bottom of the second as junior Alyssa Ward singled past the third baseman with the bases loaded to score sophomore Kelli Gleiser.
The Bulls put two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth, forcing Miami (OH) to put Simpson back in the game. The RedHawks got on the board with a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth, but still trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth. Buffalo went through three pitchers in the top of the sixth inning as Miami (OH) sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs, taking a 9-3 lead. The back-breaking hit in the inning was a pinch-hit grand slam home run from Remy Edwards off of Land.
Sophomore Tori Speckman started for Buffalo and pitched 5.0 innings as she struck out six batters, while allowing six hits and three runs. Land was charged with five runs in just 0.1 innings and Johnson came back in and allowed one run as she pitched the final 1.2 innings.
Nevez and Ward each went 2-for-4 from the plate in the second game, while Curtiss went 1-for-2 with the home run and a pair of walks. Sophomore Holly Luciano, junior Andi Saucier and senior Kristin Waldron also had hits in the game as Waldron's was a double to deep right field.
The Bulls will return to action tomorrow against Ball State with first pitch at 2:00 pm. Senior Day will take place on Sunday against Ball State at 1:00 pm.
