TROY, NY - The Buffalo wrestling team dropped two matches and won one match on Saturday afternoon at the Northeast duals, which were being held in Troy, NY. The Bulls (1-2) lost to NC State by the score of 31-7, then won their next matchup with Sacred Heart 30-6 before falling to Clarion 29-7 to finish off their afternoon.
"We need focus on the process and wrestling hard," stated first year head coach John Stutzman. "We did some good things today, but we need to have more urgency and belief in ourselves."
Max Soria started off the day strong for the Bulls as he picked up the major decision victory over Brandon Calas of NC State. The Bulls however, dropped their next seven matches before Angelo Malvestuto won by decision over Karrone Jones at 197 pounds. NC State finished the Bulls off in the heavyweight class as William Cook won by decision over freshman James Benjamin.
In the first round of the consolation bracket, the Bulls dominated from start to finish as they only lost one match to Sacred Heart, downing the Pioneers 30-6. Soria picked up his second straight major decision victory while Justin Farmer and Nick Flannery each picked up solid wins at 133 and 141 pounds respectively. Following a loss at 149 pounds, the Bulls rattled off six straight match victories as John Northrup, Tyler Rill and Tony Lock each won their matches by major decision. Transfer Rrok Ndokaj and Malvestuto won by decision while Jared Lux won by forfeit at 197.
In the ensuing round of the consolation bracket, the Bulls seemed to get a little worn down as they lost their first five matches against Clarion. Wally Maziarz picked up his first victory of the day as he won in double overtime. The Bulls however, couldn't rally around the Maziarz victory as they lost three of the next four matches to lose to Clarion by the score of 29-7. Malvestuto won his third straight at 197 pounds in the defeat.
Malvestuto was the lone Bull to win all three of his matches on the afternoon. He won two matches at 197 pounds and one match as a heavyweight, against Sacred Heart.
The Buffalo wrestling team will return to the mat next Saturday as they open up conference action at Kent State. The dual is set to start at 12:00 pm.
