BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo women's soccer team (3-2-2) dropped their first game on home turf on Wednesday night to Niagara by the score of 2-1 despite outshooting the Purple Eagles 15-8 for the game. The Bulls defensive scoreless streak came to an end, 449:28 minutes, marking the third longest streak in school history.
The loss for Buffalo snaps their five-game unbeaten streak and marks the first loss in the month of September as the Bulls last loss came to Michigan State on August 23.
"I was really pleased with the chances we generated today," stated head coach Michael Thomas. "We didn't get a result today because we were better in the broad strokes tonight than we have been but a lot of the little details that lead to winning and losing soccer games we didn't take care of tonight."
The Bulls totally dominated the second half of play and they were rewarded finally in the 71st minute off of a perfect corner kick from Kassidy Kidd. Kidd's cross ended up on the foot of Jackie Hall in the box, and Hall buried the ball behind the diving Niagara goalkeeper to draw the game closer at 2-1 in favor of the visitors. The tally for Hall was her first career goal.
UB put the pressure on in the final 19 minutes of the contest but they were unable to score the equalizing goal.
The Purple Eagles got on the board first on Wednesday night as Brianna Catipovic took a feed from Catherine Meyer and fired a shot just past the out-stretched arm of senior goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon, ending Wheldon's shutout streak at 449 minutes.
Following halftime, Niagara came out quick and extended their lead to two as Catipovic found the back of the net once again as she buried a loose ball in the box behind Wheldon for her fifth tally of the season. Hayley Besaw picked up the assist on the marker.
The Bulls had multiple chances to draw the score closer following Catipovic's second goal of the season, but three second half shots rang off the goal post for the Bulls, shots from Courtney Mann, Katie Roberts and Courtney Gross all found the post.
For the game, the Bulls held the dominating 15-8 advantage in shots along with the 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Roberts led all Bulls with four shots while nine Buffalo players recorded at least one shot for the game. Wheldon made three saves in the loss for Buffalo while her counterpart, Claire Feiertag, made eight saves in the Purple Eagles first victory of the season.
Buffalo will now have just over a week off to prepare for their upcoming conference slate of games, starting with Ball State on Friday, September 27 at 7:30 pm at UB Stadium. The Bulls will also host Miami (OH) on Sunday, September 29 at 12:00 pm in their final of seven-straight home games.
